  • Should we try to do the balloons ourselves?
While it may seem cheaper to DIY your balloons, there are important factors to consider. Unless balloons are professionally treated with a flight-extending solution, they will only float for about 8–10 hours. That’s why balloon décor is typically created on the day of the event. Inflating balloons also takes time—about 2 hours for 100 balloons if you’re inexperienced. And by the time you purchase uninflated balloons, rent a helium tank and inflator, and buy ribbon, the cost savings are minimal. Most balloon decorators offer competitive pricing on pre-inflated balloons, saving you time, hassle, and last-minute stress.

  • How long will my balloons float?
Please note that the lifespan of our balloons depends on their size and the materials they are made of. The larger the balloon, the more helium is required, which means it will last longer. Foil balloons tend to last longer than latex balloons. Additionally, we treat our balloons with flight extenders, which can increase their lifespan up to five times. Our sculptures are filled with nitrogen, which can make them last up to one month or longer, depending on the surrounding environment.

  • How do I choose a balloon company that’s right for our event
How to Choose the Right Balloon Company for Your Event Selecting the right balloon company for your event can feel overwhelming—but with the right questions and a little research, you’ll find the perfect fit. Start by seeking out professional balloon decorators who specialize in décor. Many of these experts showcase their work at premium event expos early in the year—an ideal opportunity to compare portfolios and take advantage of show specials and package deals. You can also ask your venue coordinator for recommendations. Hotels, banquet halls, and event spaces often have firsthand experience with local vendors and can steer you toward true professionals. When meeting with a balloon artist, look for signs of professionalism, creativity, and reliability. They should make you feel confident in both their artistic vision and business practices. Here are a few key questions to ask: Do you have recent references I can contact? Are you insured? Have you decorated this specific venue before? Can I see photos? Do you offer packages, and are you open to intimate as well as large-scale décor? Is delivery and setup included? Can I visit an event setup in progress to observe your work? It’s also a good idea to confirm if they are a Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) through Qualatex, which is the industry’s most respected credential. Lastly, a professional balloon company should have a dedicated website—not just social media pages—so you can easily view their work, pricing, and service options. Taking the time to ask the right questions ensures your event will look as amazing as you imagine it.
  • Are latex balloons biodegradable?
Are Latex Balloons Environmentally Friendly? Yes! Latex balloons are made from 100% natural rubber tree sap and are biodegradable, decomposing at about the same rate as an oak leaf. The latex comes from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, grown in Malaysia, Asia, and Africa. Latex tapping is a sustainable process that doesn’t harm the tree, which can continue producing for up to 35 years. In fact, latex harvesting helps prevent deforestation, as the trees are preserved rather than cut down. We take our environmental responsibility seriously. For balloon releases: We hand-tie every balloon (no plastic clips or discs) We use biodegradable ribbon We ensure that all materials used are as eco-conscious as possible Additionally, latex products can be recycled into items like car bumpers, sports gear, and windshield wipers—making them a smart and sustainable choice for your event.
  • What happens to balloons that fly away?
What Happens to Latex Balloons After Release? It’s important to understand what occurs when latex balloons are released—intentionally or accidentally. Studies show that properly tied latex balloons can ascend to altitudes of up to five miles, where the cold causes them to freeze and shatter into small, spaghetti-like pieces. These fragments then drift back to earth. While concerns have been raised about wildlife safety, research indicates that when small, soft pieces of latex are ingested by animals, they typically pass through the digestive system without causing harm. That said, we at The Art of the Party are committed to eco-conscious practices and recommend responsible balloon use. For all releases: We use hand-tied latex balloons (no plastic ties) We discourage mass balloon releases in favor of tethered displays or other sustainable alternatives when appropriate Our goal is to create joy while respecting the planet.
  • Why should I be careful with Metallic balloons outside?
It's crucial to always exercise caution when handling balloons, especially those filled with helium. They can pose a danger if they become entangled in power lines. Loose balloons, particularly those made of metallic/foil/mylar materials, have the potential to cause power outages and may also cause wires to fall to the ground, leading to property damage, fire, or even injury or death. To avoid potential balloon hazards, it's important to follow these guidelines: NEVER release helium balloons outdoors, NEVER attempt to retrieve balloons that are caught in power lines, and NEVER go near a downed power line or dangling wire.
  • What happens when a balloon pops?
If the sound of a balloon popping startles you, you’re not alone. A bursting balloon creates a small sonic boom! Once a hole is made in an inflated balloon, the quick release of the balloons energy, or air, causes the hole to grow at almost the speed of sound in rubber. Since this speed is much higher than the speed of sound in air, the hole in the balloon breaks the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom.
  • How many balloons does Balloon Creations By Carolyn use per year?
A Note About Our Balloons and the Trees Behind Them As part of a recent presentation for LeTip, we did some digging into the environmental side of our business—and what we found was both eye-opening and inspiring. On average, our business uses approximately 400,000 11" latex balloons each year. What’s fascinating is that each Hevea Brasiliensis—the natural rubber tree—produces enough sap (latex) to make only two 11" balloons per day. That means it takes 548 rubber trees, working every single day of the year, to support our business alone. These trees, grown in regions like Asia and Africa, begin producing latex at around age 7 and continue for about 28 years, retiring at approximately 35 years old. Our balloon business—and the trees that have quietly supported it—are now in their 35th year. And with a little luck and a lot of continued support, we hope that when our trees retire in this year, we can too... (then COVID came.) It’s a beautiful reminder of how connected we are to the earth, and how even a balloon business can carry a legacy rooted in nature.
  • Where were balloons invented?
A Fun Bit of Balloon History 🎈 Did you know the modern latex balloon was invented during the Great Depression? It all started with Neil Tillotson, a chemical engineer experimenting with liquid latex in hopes of creating inner tubes. Instead, he dipped a piece of cardboard—sketched with a cat’s face—into the latex. When it dried, he had created the very first “cat balloon,” complete with ears! Tillotson made about 2,000 of these balloons and sold them at Boston’s Patriot Day parade, launching what would become a beloved party staple for generations to come. Later, in the late 1970s, another balloon innovation emerged: silver metalized balloons—commonly (but incorrectly) called Mylar. These were developed for the New York City Ballet and are actually made from metalized nylon. They're more durable and more expensive than latex balloons, and are often used for special messages and long-lasting décor.
  • Do Balloons Create Litter?
Understanding Mass Balloon Releases Mass balloon releases often come under criticism from those concerned about litter and environmental impact. However, many of these claims are based on anecdotal or subjective evidence, with little factual data to support them. It’s important to note that professional balloon releases follow strict industry guidelines: Only 100% biodegradable latex balloons are used Balloons must be self-tied, with no plastic clips, strings, or ribbons attached When released, latex balloons typically rise to an altitude of approximately five miles, where changes in temperature and air pressure cause them to undergo brittle fracture—breaking into small, spaghetti-like pieces that scatter across wide areas. According to research, in a standard 500-balloon release, the return density of intact or unexploded balloons is no greater than one balloon per 15 square miles. Regardless of the form in which a latex balloon returns to the ground, it biodegrades at the same rate as an oak leaf, eventually forming a natural soil nutrient. We encourage responsible use and understanding of balloon materials. For more information and scientific studies related to balloon releases, environmental impact, and balloon safety, visit The Balloon Council.
  • Do you rent helium tanks?
Yes, we do! We're one of the few companies that rent helium tanks for events and businesses. We always recommend renting over purchasing disposable tanks—those often inflate far fewer balloons than advertised, can't be refilled, and ultimately end up in a landfill.
  • Can you inflate the Amazon balloon kit I bought?
Can You Assemble a Kit I Bought on Amazon? We can inflate any foil/mylar balloons you bring, but we only inflate our own professional-grade latex balloons—made in the USA. These are designed for event use, don’t cause hand injuries from over-stretching, and don’t have the strong chemical smell many imported balloons do. Unfortunately, most $15 balloon kits sold online are made with lower-quality materials that often pop easily or arrive deflated. We’ve had many customers disappointed with these kits, then surprised by the extra cost to have us assemble them. Our pricing reflects the time, expertise, and materials we provide—including commercial-grade balloons, inflation equipment, and overhead costs.
  • How Long Will My Balloons Last?
How Long Will My Balloons Last? We use high-quality, professional-grade balloons and take great care in properly storing them in a cool, dark, and dry environment to maintain their quality before use. Air-filled latex balloons can last up to a month indoors, especially when kept away from direct sunlight, heat, and sharp objects. Mylar (foil) balloons last even longer—often several weeks, depending on conditions. When placing your order, please let us know how long you need your balloons to last, and we’ll tailor our setup accordingly. We offer several options to extend balloon longevity: Hi-Float Treatment: A safe, liquid solution added to the inside of latex balloons before inflation. Once dried, Hi-Float forms a coating that helps hold helium in longer, extending the float time of latex balloons from 8–10 hours up to 2–5 days (sometimes longer).
  • How Far in Advance Should I Place My Order?
How Far in Advance Should I Place My Order? For installations, we recommend placing your order one week in advance. We can most often deliver the next day Orders placed with less than three days notice may be subject to stock on hand, including color choices and specialty balloons
  • How much do you charge for balloons?

  • What is Helium?
Is Helium Safe and What Is It Used For? Yes, helium is environmentally safe. As a non-toxic, inert gas, helium is widely used in many industries—including for inflating balloons—thanks to its lighter-than-air properties and chemical stability. However, while it’s safe in the air, inhaling helium directly from balloons or tanks is extremely dangerous. Doing so can displace oxygen in your lungs, which may lead to dizziness, loss of consciousness, or even suffocation. Serious injuries and deaths have occurred from inhaling helium—it is not a harmless party trick. Beyond party décor, helium plays a critical role in nuclear medicine and healthcare: It is used to cool the superconducting magnets in MRI machines, making advanced diagnostic imaging possible. Helium is essential in producing and handling radioactive isotopes, which are used in cancer treatment and medical diagnostics. It provides a safe, non-reactive environment for many laboratory and surgical applications. Helium is a valuable natural resource, and responsible use helps ensure its availability for life-saving medical technologies as well as celebrations.
