Our Story In 2000, we officially launched Balloon Creations By Carolyn, which had already been growing steadily through word of mouth. In 2007, a family trip to Disney World—and one unforgettable face-painting experience at Animal Kingdom—inspired Carolyn to expand into face and body art. That passion grew into a retail shop, a team of artists, and eventually Just For Fun Art, a studio designed to spark creativity in kids and adults alike. While we’ve since sold the face painting branch of the business, our heart remains in art, learning, and joyful celebration. Today, our two worlds—balloon decor and creative arts—have come together under The Art of the Party, where we celebrate every event with imagination, care, and a whole lot of color. Let’s Make Magic Happen

Yes! Children who are able to sit and paint are welcome to attend any of our events. For Open Studio sessions, you’re welcome to bring children of any age—we even have a hidden playhouse just for kids 4 and under, so you can enjoy painting while they play! Plus, we have what we proudly call the best toy box in Sacramento!
Yes, you can bring your own instructor to an art event. Our standard rate applies unless they provide all their own supplies (paint, brushes, canvases). If they bring all materials, we offer a 25% discount off our regular rate. This allows you to customize your experience while enjoying a reduced cost.
Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own decorations—with a few guidelines. Because we showcase artwork from local artists, nothing can be taped, tacked, or attached to the walls. You’re welcome to bring table décor, centerpieces, or themed accents to make the space your own.
We do ask that you leave the balloons to us. Balloons have been our specialty for over 35 years, and we want your event to reflect the same quality and professionalism we’re known for. Think of it this way—you wouldn’t bring groceries into a restaurant and ask the chef to cook your meal. We’ll handle the balloon décor so everything looks its best!
Yes! We’ve created special areas just for our littlest guests:
Hidden Playhouse – A child-sized playhouse complete with a kitchen, sink, pots and pans, table, chairs, shopping cart, and pretend food. It’s designed for children ages four and under only, and must always be visually supervised by a parent. For safety, the door has been removed so parents can easily see inside, while a playful curtain keeps it cozy and fun.
Giant Toy Chest – The biggest toy box in Sacramento, painted like a treasure chest! Kids love it so much that sometimes they pause their art projects to play.
Toddler Soft Play Area – A small but growing play setup designed specifically for toddlers.
Dress-Up Collection – A huge selection of costumes, hats, accessories, glasses, and costume jewelry so kids can dress up and be silly. (Included with party packages; small fee applies otherwise.)
Creative Play Stations – A bead station, endless coloring pages, and hundreds of crayons for classic fun.
Best of all, most of these activities are included at no extra cost—a perfect way to keep little ones entertained while the big kids and adults create!
Yes! We host creative team-building events that are perfect for businesses, schools, and organizations. Groups can enjoy guided art projects such as painting, resin pouring, or mixed media activities, designed to spark creativity, encourage collaboration, and provide a fun break from the office.
You’re welcome to bring in food and drinks, and we provide the tables, chairs, and all art supplies. Whether it’s a staff retreat, client appreciation event, or a way to bring your team closer together, we’ll customize the experience to fit your group’s needs.
We can also bring the fun to you! We have everything needed for up to 100 people.
While it may seem cheaper to DIY your balloons, there are important factors to consider. Unless balloons are professionally treated with a flight-extending solution, they will only float for about 8–10 hours. That’s why balloon décor is typically created on the day of the event.
Inflating balloons also takes time—about 2 hours for 100 balloons if you’re inexperienced. And by the time you purchase uninflated balloons, rent a helium tank and inflator, and buy ribbon, the cost savings are minimal. Most balloon decorators offer competitive pricing on pre-inflated balloons, saving you time, hassle, and last-minute stress.
The Art Of The Party (formerly Balloon Creations By Carolyn) has proudly served the Sacramento area for over 35 years. As Certified Balloon Artists (CBAs), our team has completed extensive training in the design principles and techniques that elevate balloon décor into true event art. We are committed to professionalism and continuing education, ensuring exceptional value and service for every client. All the balloon décor featured on our website showcases our actual work—no stock images unless noted. We are a licensed and insured business, carrying $2,000,000 in liability coverage for your peace of mind. Our team members are background-checked and TB-screened through the Sacramento school districts, and we legally employ and compensate our staff. We also collect and pay all required sales taxes. To ensure the highest quality presentation, we never inflate balloons on site. Instead, we use our own company delivery vans to transport fully assembled balloon décor, so everything arrives complete and ready to set up. In addition to stunning balloon décor, we offer balloon twisting and face painting to elevate your event. We are the original Balloon Creations in both Sacramento and California, with over 200 glowing testimonials and references available upon request. As a family-owned and operated business, we’re here to make your celebration fun, easy, and unforgettable.

What is a Certified Balloon Artist (CBA)?
A Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) is a balloon professional who has completed the industry’s most comprehensive certification program, offered by the Qualatex Balloon Network (QBN). This certification ensures that the artist has extensive training in the principles of design, balloon construction, and professional standards in the balloon décor industry.
To earn the CBA designation, a balloon professional must pass all QBN written exams with a score of 80% or higher, and successfully complete a timed, 4-hour hands-on Practical Exam that tests their ability to apply the QBN curriculum in real-world designs.
CBAs are committed to growing their businesses through education, professional networking, referrals, and continued support from the global Qualatex community. With over 2,000 CBAs worldwide, this certification signifies a high level of expertise, reliability, and dedication to quality.
Please note that the lifespan of our balloons depends on their size and the materials they are made of. The larger the balloon, the more helium is required, which means it will last longer. Foil balloons tend to last longer than latex balloons. Additionally, we treat our balloons with flight extenders, which can increase their lifespan up to five times. Our sculptures are filled with nitrogen, which can make them last up to one month or longer, depending on the surrounding environment.
The Qualatex Balloon Network (QBN) is a community of businesses specializing in high-quality balloon decor and bouquets using Qualatex products. QBN members are committed to exceptional service, sound business practices, and ongoing education. They believe balloons create a unique atmosphere and effectively convey emotions, ensuring superior value for customers. This foundation sets businesses up for future success by maintaining high standards and continuous improvement.
How to Choose the Right Balloon Company for Your Event
Selecting the right balloon company for your event can feel overwhelming—but with the right questions and a little research, you’ll find the perfect fit.
Start by seeking out professional balloon decorators who specialize in décor. Many of these experts showcase their work at premium event expos early in the year—an ideal opportunity to compare portfolios and take advantage of show specials and package deals.
You can also ask your venue coordinator for recommendations. Hotels, banquet halls, and event spaces often have firsthand experience with local vendors and can steer you toward true professionals.
When meeting with a balloon artist, look for signs of professionalism, creativity, and reliability. They should make you feel confident in both their artistic vision and business practices. Here are a few key questions to ask:
Do you have recent references I can contact?
Are you insured?
Have you decorated this specific venue before? Can I see photos?
Do you offer packages, and are you open to intimate as well as large-scale décor?
Is delivery and setup included?
Can I visit an event setup in progress to observe your work?
It’s also a good idea to confirm if they are a Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) through Qualatex, which is the industry’s most respected credential. Lastly, a professional balloon company should have a dedicated website—not just social media pages—so you can easily view their work, pricing, and service options.
Taking the time to ask the right questions ensures your event will look as amazing as you imagine it.
Are Latex Balloons Environmentally Friendly? Yes! Latex balloons are made from 100% natural rubber tree sap and are biodegradable, decomposing at about the same rate as an oak leaf.
The latex comes from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, grown in Malaysia, Asia, and Africa. Latex tapping is a sustainable process that doesn’t harm the tree, which can continue producing for up to 35 years. In fact, latex harvesting helps prevent deforestation, as the trees are preserved rather than cut down.
We take our environmental responsibility seriously. For balloon releases:
We hand-tie every balloon (no plastic clips or discs)
We use biodegradable ribbon
We ensure that all materials used are as eco-conscious as possible
Additionally, latex products can be recycled into items like car bumpers, sports gear, and windshield wipers—making them a smart and sustainable choice for your event.
What Happens to Latex Balloons After Release? It’s important to understand what occurs when latex balloons are released—intentionally or accidentally. Studies show that properly tied latex balloons can ascend to altitudes of up to five miles, where the cold causes them to freeze and shatter into small, spaghetti-like pieces. These fragments then drift back to earth.
While concerns have been raised about wildlife safety, research indicates that when small, soft pieces of latex are ingested by animals, they typically pass through the digestive system without causing harm.
That said, we at The Art of the Party are committed to eco-conscious practices and recommend responsible balloon use. For all releases:
We use hand-tied latex balloons (no plastic ties)
We discourage mass balloon releases in favor of tethered displays or other sustainable alternatives when appropriate
Our goal is to create joy while respecting the planet.
It's crucial to always exercise caution when handling balloons, especially those filled with helium. They can pose a danger if they become entangled in power lines. Loose balloons, particularly those made of metallic/foil/mylar materials, have the potential to cause power outages and may also cause wires to fall to the ground, leading to property damage, fire, or even injury or death. To avoid potential balloon hazards, it's important to follow these guidelines: NEVER release helium balloons outdoors, NEVER attempt to retrieve balloons that are caught in power lines, and NEVER go near a downed power line or dangling wire.
A Note About Our Balloons and the Trees Behind Them
As part of a recent presentation for LeTip, we did some digging into the environmental side of our business—and what we found was both eye-opening and inspiring.
On average, our business uses approximately 400,000 11" latex balloons each year. What’s fascinating is that each Hevea Brasiliensis—the natural rubber tree—produces enough sap (latex) to make only two 11" balloons per day.
That means it takes 548 rubber trees, working every single day of the year, to support our business alone. These trees, grown in regions like Asia and Africa, begin producing latex at around age 7 and continue for about 28 years, retiring at approximately 35 years old.
Our balloon business—and the trees that have quietly supported it—are now in their 35th year. And with a little luck and a lot of continued support, we hope that when our trees retire in this year, we can too... (then COVID came.)
It’s a beautiful reminder of how connected we are to the earth, and how even a balloon business can carry a legacy rooted in nature.
A Fun Bit of Balloon History 🎈
Did you know the modern latex balloon was invented during the Great Depression?
It all started with Neil Tillotson, a chemical engineer
experimenting with liquid latex in hopes of creating inner tubes. Instead, he dipped a piece of cardboard—sketched with a cat’s face—into the latex. When it dried, he had created the very first “cat balloon,” complete with ears!
Tillotson made about 2,000 of these balloons and sold them at Boston’s Patriot Day parade, launching what would become a beloved party staple for generations to come.
Later, in the late 1970s, another balloon innovation emerged: silver metalized balloons—commonly (but incorrectly) called Mylar. These were developed for the New York City Ballet and are actually made from metalized nylon. They're more durable and more expensive than latex balloons, and are often used for special messages and long-lasting décor.
Understanding Mass Balloon Releases
Mass balloon releases often come under criticism from those concerned about litter and environmental impact. However, many of these claims are based on anecdotal or subjective evidence, with little factual data to support them.
It’s important to note that professional balloon releases follow strict industry guidelines:
Only 100% biodegradable latex balloons are used
Balloons must be self-tied, with no plastic clips, strings, or ribbons attached
When released, latex balloons typically rise to an altitude of approximately five miles, where changes in temperature and air pressure cause them to undergo brittle fracture—breaking into small, spaghetti-like pieces that scatter across wide areas.
According to research, in a standard 500-balloon release, the return density of intact or unexploded balloons is no greater than one balloon per 15 square miles. Regardless of the form in which a latex balloon returns to the ground, it biodegrades at the same rate as an oak leaf, eventually forming a natural soil nutrient.
We encourage responsible use and understanding of balloon materials. For more information and scientific studies related to balloon releases, environmental impact, and balloon safety, visit The Balloon Council.
We can inflate any foil/mylar balloons you bring, but we only inflate our own professional-grade latex balloons—made in the USA. These are designed for event use and don’t have the strong chemical smell many imported balloons do. Unfortunately, most $15 balloon kits sold online are made with lower-quality materials that often pop easily or arrive deflated. We’ve had many customers disappointed with these kits, then surprised by the extra cost to have us assemble them. Our pricing reflects the time, expertise, and materials we provide—including commercial-grade balloons, inflation equipment, and overhead costs.
How Long Will My Balloons Last?
We use high-quality, professional-grade balloons and take great care in properly storing them in a cool, dark, and dry environment to maintain their quality before use.
Air-filled latex balloons can last up to a month indoors, especially when kept away from direct sunlight, heat, and sharp objects.
Mylar (foil) balloons last even longer—often several weeks, depending on conditions.
When placing your order, please let us know how long you need your balloons to last, and we’ll tailor our setup accordingly. We offer several options to extend balloon longevity:
Hi-Float Treatment: A safe, liquid solution added to the inside of latex balloons before inflation. Once dried, Hi-Float forms a coating that helps hold helium in longer, extending the float time of latex balloons from 8–10 hours up to 2–5 days (sometimes longer).
How Much Do Your Balloon Designs Cost?
We offer balloon décor for every budget, from simple bouquets to large custom decor.
Want to save? When you pick up your order, you not only avoid delivery fees, but we also offer a pickup discount—because it helps us save on staffing costs, and we’re happy to pass those savings on to you!
What Areas Do You Serve? We serve the greater Sacramento, CA region, within a 75-mile radius of ZIP code 95834. This includes (but is not limited to):
Sacramento

Yes, if requested when you place your order. A return trip fee applies (usually the same as the delivery charge, depending on the day and time).
We take sustainability seriously—our bases, frames, and balloon weights are all reused, and latex balloons are popped and placed in the recycle bin. Latex balloons are made from natural rubber, so they are 100% biodegradable.
We offer a variety of services beyond balloons, including: A Private Event Venue for birthdays, showers, and special gatherings. Art-Themed Birthday Parties & Kids’ Art Camps for creative, hands-on celebrations. Yard Celebration Signs & Outdoor Décor for big statements on the lawn. Dancing Tubes for Rent to add energy to any event. Helium Tank Rentals for DIY balloon setups with professional-quality supplies.
Is Helium Safe and What Is It Used For?
Yes, helium is environmentally safe. As a non-toxic, inert gas, helium is widely used in many industries—including for inflating balloons—thanks to its lighter-than-air properties and chemical stability.
However, while it’s safe in the air, inhaling helium directly from balloons or tanks is extremely dangerous. Doing so can displace oxygen in your lungs, which may lead to dizziness, loss of consciousness, or even suffocation. Serious injuries and deaths have occurred from inhaling helium—it is not a harmless party trick.
Beyond party décor, helium plays a critical role in nuclear medicine and healthcare:
It is used to cool the superconducting magnets in MRI machines, making advanced diagnostic imaging possible.
Helium is essential in producing and handling radioactive isotopes, which are used in cancer treatment and medical diagnostics.
It provides a safe, non-reactive environment for many laboratory and surgical applications.
Helium is a valuable natural resource, and responsible use helps ensure its availability for life-saving medical technologies as well as celebrations.
